A little about Paul

I graduated from ESO Maidstone Kent in 1997. Upon graduating I was offered work at the Sussex Back Pain Clinic in Brighton. This was a fantastic opportunity to start my career in the world of Osteopathy. During my time at college I was fortunate to secure The Heeler Centre, I started working here in 1998. Due to demand, I had to focus my attentions purely on my new practice. Outside of work, I love to travel throughout Asia. I started out in my working career as a Civil Engineer and later became a self-taught builder. I enjoy walking and DIY.

Why did you choose your profession?

When I was young enough to play rugby, I would occasionally visit an osteopath. I was always amazed how they were able to work wonders with the body structure. During a period of recession in the building industry, I took the opportunity to retrain and learn how to rebuild a body. Hardest thing I ever did but it has been the most exciting experience.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I love the opportunity to meet a cross section of people and be of service to the community. We are situated in a superb location which enables people to easily use our services.

What areas do you specialise in?

I specialise in abdominal and pelvic dysfunction. I am passionate about providing relief for post-surgical dysfunctions.

What conditions do you most enjoy treating?

I enjoy treating the abdomen and pelvis using myofascial intervention. Conditions such as period pain, caesarean section, bloating, scaring and adhesions.

What is Myotherapy Fascial Release?

Myotherapy fascial release is an involuntary engaging muscle release technique that enables the persons muscle to unwind through time and space. Symptomatic relief will be achieved from the initial treatment. During myotherapy fascial release work the body often ‘unwinds’, going into spontaneous movement as the fascia and muscles release. The practitioner works this movement, providing support where needed. The body ‘requests’ to move and unwind. If myofascial restriction was due to physical or emotional trauma, the body will backtrack to just before the original incident, thus clearing built up negative patterns.

What it is

I use a contact, which can be through the clothing, to “logon” to the fascial pattern. The movements that occur are involuntary, it feels like an importune fascial dance. Like a puppet with a mind of its own. Or unwrapping a screwed up piece of tissue paper, and then ironing it out. Your body knows what it wants!

What it is not

This is nothing like conventional myofascial release! This is where a therapist uses light pressure to find trigger points, or knots, in the body's connective tissue. The therapist then applies gentle stretching and massage to loosen the muscles.

How it helps

Myotherapy fascial release can help with pain, tightness, tension, tethering, bloating, period pain, numbness, joint and muscle function [after surgery and post-operative scaring (not aesthetically)] caused by fascial muscle matrix and ligamentous restrictions. These restrictions can be caused by injury, surgery, overuse, inactivity, or poor posture. Anyone can experience this therapy. However its effectiveness is on conditions that have proved problematic to resolve using conventional approaches.

How it happens

The hypothesis is that the therapist uses gentle touch thus stimulating receptors in the fascia, which activate the parasympathetic and central nervous systems. The central nervous system then guides the client's movements until they reach a state of ease.

How it feels

Clients may experience twitches, repetitive movements, or full body movement. They may also feel emotions surfacing. After the treatment is complete you will feel lighter and during the following few days associated patterns and symptoms will disappear or become lessened. This is due to the tissues traumatic memory being released.

How long it takes

It does not take long. This is because we are requesting permission from your system to release the appropriate pattern. This is based on the desire of your body system to unwind. You will notice significant results within a week of the first treatment. To be totally effective you will need between 3 and 5 sessions. A booster session may be required, you will know if this is necessary after a unique time period. Your body will tell you!

Who can provide it

This is normally only available from an experienced cranial based osteopath. This approach is not to be confused with cranial osteopathy, although it does use “similar” tools. Other therapists who are fluid with their knowledge of the involuntary mechanism can also provide this approach.

What to expect

Sessions are always complete within a 60 minute time frame. You will not experience any discomfort. Drink plenty of water after treatment.

Myofascial Memories

Myofascial Release (Muscle – Fascia – Release) is used for the release of fascia which has become stuck, hardened and dehydrated. Restricted fascia can lead to undiagnosed pain, exhaustion and immune system dysfunctions. Disruption of the fascia matrix occurs in response to physical or emotional trauma.
This is a gentle yet effective treatment which works with your body, mind and emotions, not against them, and you are gently guiding this process in tandem with your therapist.

Testimonials

"I am singing your praises to everybody that I meet – I can't believe that I now have no pain relating to any of my scars . I had accepted what the surgeons told me , that after 5 abdominal surgeries I was never going to be totally pain free – but now I am. I'm still getting used to it! I am so grateful that you have helped me, I can now sleep comfortably and I don't have to hold my stomach and sides when doing things. I am so happy that I came to see you. Thanks so much."

Alice

"Following surgery for my breast cancer and the removal of 3 axillary nodes I experienced burning pain down my arm and into my hand. I also had numbness in the palm of my hand. Paul Heeler diagnosed adhesions from the surgery and manipulated the affected area. There was some improvement immediately and over the following few months the improvement continued. I now have no symptoms and the feeling has returned to my hand. I would recommend this treatment by Paul Heeler to anyone experiencing problems due to post surgery/injury adhesions."
