A little about John
I am a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and I am also registered with the Health & Care Professions Council.
After graduation from the University of Southampton in 1996 I spent two years at Southampton General Hospital as a junior physiotherapist before moving to the Wessex Nuffield Hospital where I was actively involved in the Wessex Knee and Sports Injury Unit as well as working in elective orthopaedics.
I set up my own practice, Walnut Tree Physiotherapy in 2003 and have since specialised in musculoskeletal medicine.
Over the years I have worked with British Swimming, British Gymnastics, British Diving and the British Olympic Association treating elite athletes in training and competition.
I got into Physiotherapy after volunteering at Southampton General Hospital in the summer of 1993, working alongside the physiotherapists in the elderly care wards. I was offered a place with the first intake of students on the new Physiotherapy degree course that started that autumn.
I most enjoy the collaborative aspect of engaging with a patient to try and resolve their problem together.
I'm broadly a musculoskeletal physio with an interest in sports medicine.
I like the challenge of any presenting condition; helping someone to understand their problem and then showing them how to try and improve their symptoms step by step.
I took a lot of satisfaction from:
- a young man who returned to a high standard of snowboarding 18 months after an ACL reconstruction;
- from helping a woman recognise her joint problems were related to her weight and being alongside as she shed 30 kilograms, and
- from helping a patient develop a strategy to banish crippling back pain with a graded programme of exercise.
